Co-Curricular Opportunities
Giving your child the chance to explore new interests and apply their skills.
Discover interests beyond the classroom
Ensuring your child receives a comprehensive education is imperative for any parent. Every child should feel the fizz of excitement that comes from exploring something that lights them up or the exhilaration that comes from being part of a team.
Participation in co-curricular activities is linked to positive academic outcomes, improved social interaction, increased physical activity and enhanced communication skills.
At OCS, we know that significant learning happens everywhere, all the time – not just in the classroom. We’ve intentionally established a co-curricular program that gives children something fun to do outside of school hours, helps them expand their friendship circle and build connections with others who have similar interests.
Easing the transition
Our Prep children are given the opportunity to interact and familiarise themselves with the rest of the school regularly with trips to our Bembooka Cafe and the Learning Hub, as well as involvement in our Primary school musicals, Primary assemblies and end of year Thanksgiving Celebrations. This regular interaction helps to ease the transition into big school for the children and there is a notable difference in the settled nature of those that went through our Prep program and those who didn’t when it comes time for Kindergarten.
Extensive opportunities to complete a holistic education
Primary and Secondary School students have a variety of co-curricular activities to broaden their educational experience beyond the classroom walls. These include opportunities in music, drama, sport and community service.
Our STAR (Students Taking an Active Role) homework centre is a safe, structured environment where students from Years 5-12 can study and complete homework and get the support they need from qualified staff. Importantly for senior students, we see a clear correlation between participation in STAR and improved HSC performance, with all our top scoring students in the HSC having accessed STAR regularly throughout their schooling.
Music-minded Secondary students have a number of opportunities to strengthen their musical and performance skills in various ensembles, including Worship Band, Senior Singers, and Senior Band. These students may also participate in our school musical. Our musicals are a significant time of building musical skills, confidence, and teamwork, culminating in sell-out performances in the Orange Civic Theatre. For students wanting to pursue drama or music in University, the musical serves as an important portfolio piece.
For those students who have a passion for sport, there are plenty of opportunities to hone their skills by participating in carnivals with representative pathways all the way up to a National level, private dance tuition, and Gala days for a large range of team sports. Students that show particular skill and aptitude for their chosen sport no matter what it is can be involved in our TAP (Talented Athlete Program) that is by selection only with particular criteria carefully considered including continued academic rigour, and personal character as well as individual sporting ability. If selected, the program offers fitness and nutrition coaching, one on one time with industry professionals, targeted training and plenty more.
